I video taped both days using a new high definition camcorder (Sony FX1).  The raw footage in high def looks great on my widescreen TV so I expect that the down-converted footage to standard def will also be good.  It will be at least two weeks before any videos will be available (Sept 18 to 25) since I need to upgrade both my editing software & computer hardware to edit this footage.

Wahine 18-Mile Race

About 40 to 50 percent of the canoes were filmed launching or paddling to the start line.   I have some long distance shots from the Keauhou area (6-mile mark).  At Honaunau almost all of the canoes were filmed finishing the race with lots of additional close-up shots as the canoes paddled by me.  Most of the canoe shots were taken from the lava by the launch ramp.  There are  lots of people shots from the launch ramp area and also from the park.

Kane  18-Mile Race

There are some shots of the men's teams getting ready & paddling in the bay.  I taped the start from a cliff which is about 1/2 mile north of the start line.  The spot is very close to where I filmed the 2005 Lili' O Race.  It's very impressive seeing over 100 canoes paddling by so early in the race.  Some of the canoes (3 or 4) were almost directly below me as they passed by.  After hiking 3/4 mile back thru the lava, I got to my truck and then got stuck in traffic.  I arrived at the finish line about 5 minutes before the lead canoe arrived (exactly the same as last year).   From the pier I taped almost all of the canoes.  The only canoe that I know that I didn't get was the "Blind Sider" with the 5 blind guys on board.  I have a good shot of them at the start and regret not getting their memorable finish.

Sunday 6-Mile Races

All of the races on Sunday (OC1, OC2, OC6 Kids, Double Hull) were filmed from the pier.  Since I was close to the start/finish line there were many good close-up shots.   The buildings on Alii Drive provided a very good backdrop to the race.  There are many shots of the canoes passing by on their way to the start line.  The starts were very fast but wonderful.  On the girls OC6 start there is a good shot of one of the canoe's ama rising 3 to 5 feet.  It was good that they didn't huli at the start.  I think I'll to do a slow motion of that shot.  Double Hull races were very colorfull with  exciting starts.   The Keauhou CC deserves to get the best-dressed award in the Wahine Double Hull.  Great outfits!!!

Videos for Sale

I'm going to produce  videos for the 18-mile races and the 6-mile races.  Both videos will probably be about 60 to 80 minutes long.  The pricing will be the same as my Cruise Paradise Car Show video, but I will add another price catagory for purchases of 6 or more DVDs.  With this Qty I will charge $10 ea and I will eat the S&H and tax expense .  At $10 it would be much easier for the clubs / crews to distribute the DVDs.    Below is my expected pricing for the DVDS:

1                DVD        $15 ea        plus      $3    S&H         plus   tax     (HI only)

2                 DVDs       $13 ea       plus      $3    S&H         plus   tax     (HI only)

3 to 5         DVDs       $ 12 ea       plus      $3    S&H         plus   tax     (HI only)

6 or more DVDS       $10 ea         I pay for S&H and taxes
